President Obama to speak at the Howard Commencement


President Obama will receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree—the highest honor—from the prestigious Howard University. Cicely Tyson also receiving honorary degree.

This year’s Convocation will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016, on the Upper Quadrangle of the Howard main campus.

The Convocation is for all candidates having completed their degree and met their financial requirements as of Summer 2015, December 2015, and May 2016.

Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. The processional of the prospective graduates and the platform party will begin at 8:30 a.m.. The Convocation will begin at 10:00 a.m.

President Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address at Howard University's commencement ceremony this year.

“It is an extraordinary honor and privilege," said Howard President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick. "President Obama’s own legacy gives the Howard Community great expectations for the leadership footprint it will leave on America and the globe."

 President Obama will receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree—the highest honor—from the university, on the same day that the school will bestow 1,300 Bachelor's Degrees, more than 300 Master's, and more than 100 Ph.Ds, according to Howard. The university is giving honorary degrees to Ambassador Horace Greeley Dawson Jr., actress/Delta Cicely Tyson, and physician L.D. Britt.

Commencement takes place on Saturday, May 7. Howard's website for the event has a clock counting down to the second until the ceremony begins.
