Phyllis Wheatley's own Dr. Vernell Lillie - Legend in Black Theater
MAY 11, 1931 – MAY 14, 2020
Obituary of Vernell LILLIE
The Founder and Artistic Director of Kuntu Repertory Theatre, Dr. Vernell Audrey Watson Lillie, died on May 11, 2020, her 89th birthday. She was born on May 11, 1931, in Hempstead, Texas, to Lillie Mae Watson and Walter J. Watson. She and her older sister Walta Delle Watson spent their early years in Hempstead. She attended Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she earned her B.A. degree in Speech and Drama. In 1952, she married jazz musician and educator Richard “Dickie Boy” Lillie, Jr. They had been friends since childhood. Two children were born to that union - Charisse R. Lillie and Marsha D.”Hisani” Lillie. She taught Speech and Drama at Worthing High School and Phyliss Wheatley High School in the Houston Independent School District for 19 years. During that time, she produced and directed theatrical productions starring outstanding student actors, whom she mentored with love and ferocity. She also acted in local theatrical productions, most famously playing Mama in RAISIN IN THE SUN. She also was a member of the Black Theatre Movement in Houston in the last sixties.
In 1969, she moved with her late husband Richard L. Lillie, Jr. and daughter Marsha “Hisani” Lillie to pursue doctoral studies in Pittsburgh, PA. She ultimately earned her M.A. degree in English from Carnegie Mellon University in 1971, and her D.A. degree in English from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Lillie joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. She served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies until her retirement in 2006.
In 1974, Dr. Lillie founded the Kuntu Repertory Theatre with the intent of examining Black life from a sociopolitical-historical perspective. Lillie used drama to educate while entertaining. Kuntu naturally developed into a supportive community for black writers, actors and artists. Rob Penny and August Wilson were closely associated with Kuntu. Since its establishment, the theatre has sponsored countless activities which highlight the African American community. Lillie has directed many productions including: The Buffalo Soldiers Plus One, Little Willie Armstrong Jones, Whispers Want to Holler, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Good Black Don’t Crack, Mahalia Jackson: Staanding on Holy Ground, Homecoming and Radio Golf. Homecoming was the first play by August Wilson to be produced by a resident company. Kuntu also traveled and performed around Pennsylvania and the country and was seen on the international stage in Edinburgh, Scotland, Toronto, Canada, The French Festival, and the Grandstown Festival in South Africa. Dr. Lillie also wrote and directed over 150 plays and collages in her lifetime and helped to launch the careers of many artists. One such artist was young Chadwick Boseman, who presented his play and taught master classes during Kuntu’s Mentors and Proteges 2002 season. He was one of many artists nurtured by Dr. Lillie.
Dr. Lillie has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award; the Outstanding Award for Women in the Arts by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and the 2003 Career Achievement in Education Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Black Theatre Festival in 2005 and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Creative Community Award. She also received numerous awards for her creative expression through the arts, her work with seniors and young people, and for her activism in education and the theatre arts.
Dr. Lillie was inducted into the prestigious Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania by Governor Tom Ridge, and she was a trained Psychodrmatist. She pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Dillard University and was an active member of the sorority throughout her life, including service as the President of the Houston Chapter and serving on National Committees.
Dr. Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, jazz musician and educator Richard L. Lillie, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Charisse R. Lillie and Dr. Marsha Lillie-Blanton, her sons-in-laws, Thomas L. McGill, Jr. and Thomas Blanton, grandchildren Jamehl Ihejeto(Ike), Alison Higgins(Kyle), Thomas McGill, III(Shannon), Leslie Arnette, Ashaki Blanton(Hope), Akilah Blanton-Taylor(Titus) and 16 great-grandchildren. The family requests that donations in honor of Dr. Lillie be made to the Black Theatre Network (Blacktheatrenetwork.org), in care of Renee Charlow, Business Manager, 8306 Bluebird Way, Lorton, VA 22079 Vernell LILLIE Obituary - Houston, TX

Why it is Important to Consider Adoption (Especially for Teens)
When teens are in foster care, it can be very traumatic to move from home to home. Most important, every child needs a forever home. Laura Herbert is an E-Family member and she is also a Family Recruitment Coordinator for The Way Home Adoption. Laura would like to let our E-Family members know of a very special teen, Latricia, who is in need of a forever home. Please click the link below to learn more about Latricia. If you would like more information, The Way Home Adoption offers trainings for persons interested in adopting teens. The next training is in June.
Also, the agency hosts monthly events, like interior design classes, golf clinics and culinary classes, so that interested parents and the teens can have the opportunity to meet one another in a positive, enriching setting. There are wonderful opportunities to use your talents and host or lead one of these enrichment events for the kids and interested parents. Please contact Laura at 713-702-0853 or go to TheWayHomeAdoption.org if you are interested in adopting a teen or hearing other ways that you can volunteer or get involved with the agency.

Young Lady in Need of Adoption - Latricia
https://www.thewayhomeadoption.org/hwnh-latricia Contact Efamily Member Laura Herbert LauraHerbert@thewayhomeadoption.org cut and paste link into your browser.
Latricia, 17, is only one year away from having a high school diploma AND a cosmetology degree. She loves going on walks, drawing, singing, and playing video games. Some of her favorite foods are ice cream, pepperoni pizza, and boneless hot wings. She enjoys shopping and hanging out at home watching scary movies. Her favorite classes in school are English, cosmetology, and environmental science. Latricia is easy going, polite, and extroverted. She makes friends easily. She is described as “determined, delightful, goal-oriented, and dedicated” by her foster parent. She does well in school and plans to go on to nursing school next fall. Although it might sound like she is already on her feet, she knows the value of family and wants to be adopted.
Latricia was raised by a wonderful mother who left the world too soon. With no family available to take care of her, she is waiting for her forever to begin again. Latricia would do well in a permanent home where her goals and dreams are celebrated and encouraged. She would thrive both as an only child in a home or one with siblings. Latricia thrives in the role of a big sister. Latricia has 2 younger siblings with whom she is very close. Any potential adoptive homes need to be encouraging and supportive of her continued contact with them. Her foster parent says, “Latricia has the determination to make it, she just needs a little boost.” Could you be the boost she needs?
Keith Wade Passing due to COVID-19
I met Keith after coming home from the KSG where I attended grad school and in my 20s became a part of the Progressive Action League a young adult group under the Harris County Council of Organizations that Sylvester Turner was President. Keith was a major contributor along with many friends I still have today to our group called "PAL". We vetted candidates, had awards for unsung heroes, particularly senior citizens and more community service work as well as election volunteering. We need to encourage our young people to join groups like this with likeminded people who hold their interests and they will become lifelong friends.
Most recently during work as Co-Chair for the Women for Turner, Keith attended our meetings and was very involved in the election of our current Mayor-I can't imagine this pandemic without Sylvester Turner's leadership!
Keith will be missed. Gone too soon. COVID-19 is impacting us all. PLEASE ASK YOURSELF before doing anything - IS THIS NECESSARY can I do it from the comfort of my home? MASK when you go out!!!

MASK UP - Memorial Day Message from the Mayor
This is Mayor Sylvester Turner. As you know, we are still in the recovering stages of the Covid 19 pandemic. We have made some progress but we still have more to go.
The virus can spread very quickly and the symptoms can range from no symptoms to mild to severe illness. Currently there is no vaccine available and we can’t relax on our social distancing and wearing facial coverings until that happens!
I’m asking you to remain vigilant and continue to MASK UP, not just for your benefit but for your loved ones & others around you. So, take care of yourself and always practice social distancing!
Remember we are Houston Strong, together we will get through this! And Don’t forget to MASK UP!

BEWARE of TEXT MESSAGE SCAM - DONT CLICK THE Link CONTACT TRACERS
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, one of the most important tools health department officials have to fight the spread of the virus is contact tracing, which is the process through which officials identify everyone who came into close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and reaches out to them to have them quarantine and monitor their symptoms, hopefully cutting off any potential community spread.
NBC:
Scammers are taking advantage of the vital contact tracing work going on to try and steal people's personal information, social security number, bank info, credit card info, and money.
A legitimate text from a contact tracer will let you know the health department they're representing and tell you to expect a call from a phone number. Then, the phone caller will NOT ask you for any personal information, but will tell you about the situation, your potential exposure, and give you instructions. At the end of the call, they may ask if you'd like to enroll in a text message program that will send out daily health and safety reminders throughout your 14-day quarantine. But they WILL NOT ask you for money or for information like your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number. There’s no reason they would need any of that information to let you know you may have contracted COVID-19.
Below is how the SCAM text message with LINK could look:
Beware text message scams from fake contact tracers

Houston Alert COVID-19 New Testing Sites
Houston Health Department, partner agencies to set up COVID-19 test sites in four new vulnerable communities
Four vulnerable Houston communities will benefit from easier access to free COVID-19 tests as the Houston Health Department and its agency partners set up new testing sites for this week.
Texas Division of Emergency Management
The Texas Division of Emergency Management and the department will open a drive-thru test site at Moreno Elementary School, 620 E. Canino Road, for Houston’s Northside and Northline areas. The two agencies will also set up a site at Holland Middle School, 1600 Gellhorn Drive, for Pleasantville-area neighborhoods.
Both sites require appointments, obtained by calling 512-883-2400 or visiting TXCOVIDTEST.ORG. The sites will open May 11-16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or until each reaches its daily capacity of 250 tests.
United Memorial Medical Center
United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) will open a new drive-thru and walk-up test site at the Stimley-Blue Ridge Neighborhood Library, 7007 W. Fuqua Street, in Missouri City.
The site will open May 11-16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until reaching its daily capacity of 250 tests. It doesn’t require people to have symptoms or appointments.
UMMC will continue to offer drive-thru testing at its site at Houston Community College-Southeast, 6815 Rustic, until May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until reaching its daily 250 test capacity.
People needing information about UMMC test sites can call 1-866-333-COVID or visit ummcscreening.com.
Houston Health Department Mobile Unit & Community-Based Sites
The department will relocate its mobile unit to the Third Ward Multi-Service Center, 3611 Ennis, from May 12 through May 16.
People don’t need to have symptoms or appointments to get a free COVID-19 test through the department’s mobile unit, which offers drive-thru or walk-up options.
Mobile unit testing is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until reaching daily capacity of 100 tests. It will relocate May 19-23 to the Northeast Multi-Service Center, 9720 Spaulding Street.
The department also continues to operate two free drive-thru COVID-19 community-based testing sites open to anyone, regardless of symptoms. Each site has capacity for 500 tests per day and opens daily until capacity is reached.
People must call the department’s COVID-19 Call Center at 832-393-4220 to receive an access code and directions to the nearest community-based site or get more information about the department’s mobile unit.
Federally Qualified Health Centers
The department is providing test kits, lab access and equipment to four local Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) so they can expand their COVID-19 testing capacity. The centers and phone numbers people can call to set up testing appointments are:
Spring Branch Community Health Center, 713-462-6565
El Centro de Corazon, 713-660-1880
Avenue 360 Health and Wellness, 713-426-0027 and
Lone Star Circle of Care at the University of Houston, 877-596-6192.
FQHC patients pay what they can afford, based on income and family size, and are not denied services due to inability to pay or lack of insurance.

Mayor Turner's Proposed Rental Relief Program
HOUSTON - Today, the Houston City Council approved a $15 million rent relief fund to help Houstonians make their payments amidst the COVID-19 public health crisis.
The money for the program will come from the federal CARES Act and will be administered by the local nonprofit BakerRipley.
“The program provides much-needed assistance for our residents. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected constituents economically, forcing many to make tough choices,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “While this rent relief fund will help thousands of people, we know thousands more will need help. We are trying to do as much as we can with the little that we have.”
Beginning Thursday, May 7 at 10 a.m., landlords can begin enrolling on the program's website. The portal will open to tenants beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 13.
BakerRipley will provide up to $1,056 of rental assistance per month to qualified low-to-moderate income people who could not pay their April and/or May rent.
“BakerRipley is honored to continue our mission, with the City’s committed support, to meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable communities,” said Claudia Aguirre, BakerRipley President and CEO. “The BakerRipley Rental Assistance Program is a critical program for many neighbors who struggled before this crisis and have seen those struggles exacerbated in the face of COVID-19. Recovery starts now. It starts with each individual and organization across this region, doing their part to keep this city a welcoming center of opportunity. Thank you, Mayor Turner, for your continued leadership and work on behalf of this amazing and resilient City.”’
The landlords who agree to participate in the program will need to agree to certain terms:
Waive all late fees, penalties, and interest for the two months.
Allow tenants to enter a payment plan for any rent due in excess of $1,056.
Rescind any prior notice to vacate and halt any prior eviction proceedings for the two months.
Renters must meet the following requirements
Live inside the city of Houston
Be late on residential rental payments for either or both the months of April and May
Be current on their rent for all months prior to April 2020
Affirm that their inability to pay is due to financial hardship resulting from the economic impact of COVID-19
Have income less than 80% of the Area Median Income (approximately $40,000 for one person or $60,000 for a family of four) or qualify for one of the programs listed in the application (e.g. Medicaid, WIC, SNAP, Head Start, or VA Pension)
The Houston Apartment Association estimates the rent relief program will help thousands of workers who have been laid off because of business closures.
“On behalf of our members, our staff, and especially our residents, I want to thank Mayor Turner and council members for their leadership in creating this vital program,” said Clay Hicks, Houston Apartment Association president. “Many of the nearly one million Houstonians who live in apartments have been unable to work – some since mid-March. This rental assistance program will help thousands of Houston apartment residents get caught up with April and May rent. And, in turn, it will help apartment properties to maintain thousands of jobs, including the maintenance workers that keep our properties running, and pay their property taxes that fund our schoolteachers, police officers, and firefighters.”
The program is expected to help at least 6,818 households.

Volunteer Opportunities with the Federal Government
Volunteers
Federal agencies and departments offer unpaid training opportunities to students in high school and college. These opportunities can provide work experience related to your academic program, while allowing you to explore career options, as well as develop your personal and professional skills. As a student volunteer, exposure to the Federal work environment allows you to learn about the missions and responsibilities of various Federal agencies and departments.
Eligibility
You are eligible to participate as a Student Volunteer if you are enrolled, at least half-time, in:
An accredited high school or trade school;
A technical or vocational school;
A junior or community college;
A four-year college or university; or
Any other accredited educational institution.
Duration
Student volunteer work may be performed during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods. The nature of your volunteer assignment as well as your weekly work schedule should be part of your work agreement. Volunteer work assignments typically have duration of 3 – 4 months.
How To Apply
If you are interested in becoming a student volunteer with the Federal Government:
Contact the Personnel/Human Resources Office at the Federal agency or department where you wish to work. Historically, the Departments of Defense (Army, Air Force and Navy), Commerce, Health and Human Services, Interior, Justice, State, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs have utilized the largest number of student volunteers. Telephone numbers for Federal agencies can be found in your telephone directory under “U.S. Government.”
Visit your school’s guidance office, career counseling, placement, or internship office for further information.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Besides student volunteers, other volunteer opportunities are limited since Federal agencies are not allowed by law (section 1342 of title 31, United States Code) to accept volunteer service. The few exceptions are:
Employment in emergencies involving the protection of life or property;
Employment of assistants to handicapped employees;
Employment of experts and consultants; and
Employment of students to further their educational goals.
In addition, some Federal agencies, such as the National Park Service and the Forest Service, have specific authorities to accept unpaid services for specific jobs or functions. Individuals who are interested in volunteering their services to the Federal Government should contact the agency of most interest to inquire about specific opportunities.
