The National Technical Association (NTA) will convene its 95th Annual Conference, September 21 -25, 2020. As the nation’s oldest and most venerated organization dedicated to supporting African Americans in STEM, the leadership felt a call to action amid the paralysis gripping the country. This is the year of adaptation and innovation. The conference will be virtual. NTA conference organizers and members are excited to connect with HBCU scholars, students, STEM professionals, HBCU alumni and future techies. NTA has partnered with African Awareness Week (Morehouse College) and the HBCU Green Fund, broadening the reach of its message.
Conference chair Felecia Davis understood the importance of continuing the organization's 95-year legacy, “At a time that the world needs to leverage its resources, it was unthinkable that NTA would sit out this moment. NTA had to acknowledge the moment and embrace the challenges that COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter Movement has had on our community. With all of its tumult, this is a space [and time] where NTA can and will provide support.”
If you look across the NTA offerings, there is a flow beginning with an academic and historic perspective of the impact of slavery and the need for representation, equity and reparations to reflections on the Year of Return, and next steps for those wanting to strengthen bridges to Africa. Akon will provide a voice for the rising entrepreneurship in sustainable energy in Africa and across the Diaspora. This will deliver attendees to more technical and scientific presentations on Covid-19, building and architecture, environmental justice, and climate change. It all culminates with a daylong Student Symposium dedicated to preparing the next generation of STEM leaders. This will be a powerful opportunity to share research, network and be inspired.
The week will begin on Monday; September 21, 2020 with the HBCU Green Fund Pre-Summit Town Hall. There will be a discussion on the current state of HBCUs and a strategy for funding their preservation and sustainability. The community is invited to participate. African Awareness Week sessions and special events will begin streaming live on the NTA site (www.ntaonline.org). Akon will simultaneously present at the Crown Forum (Morehouse College) and at the NTA conference on Thursday, September 24 at 11:00 am. Most of these events will be Live Streamed and open to the public. However, registration is required for complete access to the entire week of sessions.
