Mayor Turner Speaks with Defender Network on Communities

Good afternoon,

We held our first-ever virtual event on Thurs., Oct. 1, with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner as our guest and it was a resounding success!

If you attended the ‘State of BLACK Houston’ event, thank you. If you were not able to participate, we have you covered.

From singing his favorite Luther Vandross song to responding to a number of critical questions on topics impacting Black Houstonians, Mayor Turner was authentic and his remarks were rich with content.

Topics covered by Mayor Turner included: policing, mental health, evictions, gentrification, economic advancement and complete communities, City of Houston support of nonprofits, affordable housing, protests, Hurricane Harvey repairs and more.

Like most Defender events, we captured a few photos. Please view and share the photos here.

Lastly, please take time to rate the event and share your ideas about future topics via this brief survey.

Our next State of BLACK virtual event is Thurs., Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. CDT with Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. Are you registered for ‘State of BLACK Harris County’? If not, please sign up now here for the free event and invite your friends and colleagues to join you.

We are grateful to our event sponsors and partners for bringing this important programming to you: Thank you to Title Sponsor: H-E-B, Presenting Sponsor: Chevron, and VIP Sponsors Amegy Bank and Cadence Bank.
